School Activities

Mulledagen

Every year, The Swedish School for Children works with a theme for a school activity. It may be a famous Swedish historical person such as Astrid Lindgren (2006-2007) and Carl Linnaeus (2007-2008), but it can also be a fairy-tale figure like Skogsmulle (2008-2009). Last year, our school's activity theme was Mulledagen. Mulle, who had a 50-year anniversary in 2007, is a symbol of respect for animals and nature. In Sweden, the activities that surround Mulledagen fulfills Swedish children's need for exploration and discovery, and develops a responsibility for all things living. Since outdoor activities are a major part of the Swedish cultural heritage. By celebrating Mulledagen, our school supports and actively participates in this important cultural practice and passes it on to our students.

It is of utmost importance to install in our students an appreciation for nature and animals by giving them opportunities to investigate and experience our natural environment. Since many of SSFC's students grow up in a metropolitan region where nature is not a part of their everyday life, the school views Friluftsdagen (a day of outdoor activities: sports, camping, hiking, etc.) as an important part of the student's social education and step towards self development and a Swedish identity. The goal of Friluftsdagen is also to strengthen the social ties between the school's families to encourage interaction between children and parents outside the framework of the Swedish school activities and thus to further promote students' development of the Swedish language.

Lucia Celebration

The main Swedish tradition is celebrated each year in order to strengthen students' identity and cultural belonging. Fall semester ends each year with singing & music, Lucia & dancing around the Christmas tree, and candy distribution from Tomten. All parents prepare to bake gingerbread, saffron buns and other holiday goodies. Julavslutning is undoubtedly The Swedish School for Children's most popular event. We also invite the Swedish adult school,The Swedish School, students and the Swedish School DC playgroup to help celebrate this festive school event.

Påskpyssel and “semlemys”

Students participate in traditional Easter craft activities in their classrooms. They paint and decorate birds, eggs and create Easter decorations in all shapes and sizes. The older students discuss påskkärring and Blåkullas origin. During påskpyssel, the school's cafeteria serves semlor (cardamom buns filled with almond paste and cream).

Last Day of School

The week before Memorial Day, The Swedish School for Children has its traditional end of school celebration. This year it was celebrated with games, Swedish music & song, and picnic. Jonas Hafström, Swedish ambassador to the United States, graciously opened the garden at the residence for our school's end of school year celebration. All students received a diploma and a chance to say goodbye to classmates and teachers before the summer holidays.
